Choosing a digital camera from the thousands of models available can seem to be an almost impossible task for the casual photographer. There are so many manufacturers, so many styles, so many possible accessories and so many terms to learn and understand in order to judge which the right camera to buy is. Luckily the internet has made comparison shopping easy. Once you know and understand the jargon that surrounds digital photography and cameras you will be able to decide on the right level of camera for your needs. It is then a simple matter to search the web for the manufacturer, camera model and price that suit you.

Digital cameras no longer store images as negatives on film. Instead, they use computer technology to store the recorded image as a series of dots called pixels. In the simplest of terms, the more pixels there are the closer together they are, the closer together the pixels are, the better the picture resolution. A cameras ability to capture images in this manner is rated in mega-pixels. The most common camera models are now routinely offering between 6 and 10 mega-pixel resolution although you can get professional camera models that offer higher resolution, generally 10 mega-pixels is more than enough for the casual user.

In addition to mega-pixels, you should look for the same features you would in any other digital camera today. Is there an auto flash feature? An auto focus feature? Does the camera have image stabilization? Are there different settings for different shots – portrait, landscape, portrait in front of landscape etc? What is the memory capacity? What kind of battery does the camera contain and is it rechargeable? What is the camera's zoom capability, both optical and digital? Does the camera also take video? If so, will it record sound as well? How easy will this model interface with your computer for uploading of photos?

There are many things to consider when buying a digital camera, but luckily the mastery of a few terms and technical specifications is all it takes to begin shopping. The internet makes shopping with side by side comparisons for electronics easier than ever. Then all you have to do is decide – do you want a mini digital camera, a compact camera or a digital SLR with changeable lenses?
